As the weather gets colder most people are heading inside. But a select few people are still out side, running, no matter the temperature. Some call them crazy, but others call them the Ames High Cross Country teams. This year, from Ames High the Girls Cross Country Team and Boys Cross Country runner Paul Hibbing will be competing at the State Cross Country meet on October 31st. The meet will be held in Ft. Dodge. This was a good season for the Ames High Girls Cross Country team as they claimed victory in Monday’s District meet at Marshalltown . "Last year we lost a lot of good runners." Senior Ellen Hansen said. "But but people really stepped up this year." This will be Hansen’s fourth State Cross Country meet so she knows what to expect. "The course [we’re running] in Ft. Dodge is on a golf course, so it’s really nice." Hansen said. Though this will be her fourth trip to state, winning districts was no less exciting for Hansen. "We were all really excited. Coach almost strangled me after the meet because he was so excited." The boys team was less successful this year and will be sending only senior Paul Hibbing to the State meet on Saturday. "This season had it’s ups and downs." Hibbing said. "Though the team came together and we progressed. Things at districts were interesting and didn’t work work out, but we ran really good times." Hibbing is also looking forward to running at Ft. Dodge. "The course is fast… and really flat. It doesn’t really capture the challenge of running Cross Country but it will be nice to run fast." "The chance to run at State is pretty special." Hibbing said, echoing the feelings of the 30 other teams, 15 boys and 15 girls teams, that will be competing at Ft. Dodge on Saturday. For all Cross Country runners this is a big weekend, capping of an dynamic season for both Ames Cross Country teams.
