Some called it football, others call it soccer. Whatever you call it, that game where you kick the ball into the net is right around the corner in terms of Ames High sports. The first team practice of the 2013 season started just two days ago on the 11th, but some of the players have already been at it for weeks. Every Tuesday and Thursday for the past three weeks, there has been an optional practice for anyone planning to partake in the upcoming season that started bright and early at 6 in the morning. â They have definitely been beneficial in helping us to get in shape for the season,â senior forward Reid Marks said. âAny touches that we can get on the ball before the season actually starts are going to help us transition back into it a lot easier.â Last season the varsity team finished 4th in state, but both coach and players want a better finish. âAs a whole we had a pretty successful season last year,â Marks said. âI think its safe to say that as a team, we want to make it back to state and get a better finish than we did last year.â Varsity head coach Chad Zmolek whoâs entering his 15th year in the position, also thinks his team can make it to state and compete. âWe have the skilled players, we have great athletes, and I think we usually have that expectation,â Zmolek said. âThatâs as a team goal but of course the real emphasis is trying to get a group of guys to enjoy playing, having a good experience, and feel like they’re on a team.â Achieving goals is what you want to accomplish throughout your sports season, and what motivates you is certain games you look forward to. âThe thing that i am looking forward to the most is getting the chance to play Valley on the road again, along with playing Nevada again this year.â Marks said. âThese are one of the few teams we lost to last year.â Whether it’s winning the state tournament, getting a hat trick, or having the skills to pay the bills, the boys soccer team is ready for another season!
