Are the Oscars racist?
February 9, 2016
The Oscars are not racist at all, despite recent claims. It is just unfortunate that there are no actors or actresses of color nominated this year. Saying that there should’ve been more diversity in the nominations implies that some of the nominees should not have been nominated. This means that Eddie Redmayne didn’t deserve his nomination or that Cate Blanchett didn’t deserve hers either.
If you to go to the Oscar’s website and scroll past the nominees for actor and actresses in a leading role, you would see the documentary: “What Happened, Miss Simone?”. This is a documentary about the life of the very famous African-American singer and activist, Nina Simone. You will also see the documentary: “A Girl In The River, The Price Of Forgiveness”. This one is about the religious-based honor killings in Pakistan and the story of a woman who was targeted by her own father and uncle. Both documentaries focus on the lives of people who are not white and are not based on white people.
In my opinion, the Oscars are not racist and there is simply not enough evidence to prove that they are. The people who were nominated are great actors and actresses, and earned their nomination. Claiming they only got nominated because they’re white is a smack in the face and all their hard work was for nothing.
